Making the Implicit Explicit: How should we as Teachers Respond?

multicultural eight

This video clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cN9OKXtzHtE raised the following questions for me:

  1. Why are the people in a bus? What message is being communicated? Do people in fancy cars not borrow money?
  2. Are some races represented more than others? Does this distribution accurately match census data?
  3. Why is one person wearing a costume? What is the significance of this? Which groups would this undermine?

Here are some others that my students shared with me:

Please add some to the list and be prepared to share your thinking in class next week about the ways in which we can help our students understand and respond to this.
